OVERVIEW OF: EXCLUSIVE: Okoye, Uzoho Are Nigeria’s Best Goalkeepers – Aikhomogbe
Former Green Eagles goalkeeper, Andrew Aikhomogbe, in this interview with NK Media Correspondent, Augustine Akhilomen from his base in Cairo, Egypt, bares his mind on Super Eagles 2021 AFCON qualifiers chances, why Uzoho and Okoye are Nigeria’s best goalkeepers, Rohr’s decision to invite Ahmed Musa among others. Excerpts:
As a goalkeeper, who would you prefer to man the Super Eagles goalpost against Benin and Lesotho in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers? Is it Uzoho, Muduka Okoye or Enyimba goalkeeper, Noble?
Well, I think Francis Uzoho and Maduka Okoye have what it takes to be Super Eagles number one goalkeeper going by what I have seen from both goalkeepers. It will be difficult for me to pick Uzoho ahead of Okoye. But one thing is certain, we can rest assured that we are in safe hands with the two keepers.
Do you think Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has invited the best players to overcome Benin and Lesotho?
As far as I am concerned, Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has invited some of the best players to prosecute the games against the Squirrels of Benin and Crocodile of Lesotho on March 27 and March 30. Like you know, every player can’t be invited but I am sure they will at one point get their chances. Going by the list of invited players such as Alex Iwobi, Samuel Chukwueze, Troost-Ekong, Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Ahmed Musa to mention a few, I think they are capable of overcoming their opponents.
What is your reaction to Ahmed Musa’s invitation to Super Eagles despite been clubless since October 2020?
It depends on how you want to look at the situation. You should understand that Rohr knows why he invited him to the team. On my part, I think, since he is the Captain he may be there to motivate the players and not necessarily play.
Do you think Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has the players to overcome Benin and Lesotho?
Without thinking it twice, I am optimistic that the players invited by Rohr have what it takes to beat Benin and Lesotho. We have the talent and experience to defeat these two teams and I see no reason why we can’t overcome them.
Will you advise the team to travel to Benin by boat as planned by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF)?
Traveling by boat may be a big risk for the players however, we should pray for the safe journey of the team to Benin. Yes, Nigerians are worried but by the help of God, the players will arrive there safely and pick the maximum points.
How best will you advise Rohr to approach the two games?
Well, we have to be cautious and at the same time approach the game with a sense of picking the three points. Playing defensively may not be the best approach because the team will be under immense pressure. We have the right players to get the right result regardless of the approach we apply for the games.
Will you go with the partnership of Osimehn and Iheanacho against Benin?
Both players are very good and I think there is nothing wrong if Rohr partners them against Benin. What is most paramount at this point is the three points.
