OVERVIEW OF: Man stabs pregnant ex-wife after court dissolves marriage in Kano
The police in Kano state have arrested a resident of the state, Bilya Abdullahi, who stabbed his pregnant ex-wife, Shafa’atu Saleh, and her elder brother, Ado Saleh, shortly after a Sharia Court dissolved his marriage to Shafa'atu.
Shafa'atu had approached the Rano Upper Shariah court to dissolve their marriage on grounds that Bilya maltreated her all through their stay as a couple.
The court heard Shafa'atu's prayers and dissolved their marriage with an order that she returns the N20,000 dowry paid to her by Bilya.
However, shortly after the judgment was passed, Bilya, who seemed angered by the verdict, allegedly brought out a knife from his pocket and stabbed his e-wife who is 9-month pregnant, inflicting several injuries on her body. The brother of the ex-wife was not spared by the angry Abdullahi who was also stabbed at the back.
Speaking to newsmen while receiving treatments at a hospital in Rano, Shafa'atu said after the court’s judgment on their case, they did not know that he came to the court with a knife and followed them as they left the court premises.
“As we were walking not too far from the court premises, he just came and spoke to me but I shunned him.
After that, Ado was in front of me, I just saw Bilya with a knife and before you knew it, he stabbed Ado at his back.
When Ado ran away, he followed him and stabbed him severally, leaving him lying in the pool of his blood.
He then returned to me. As a pregnant woman, I could not run. I fell to the ground. He then pounced on me, stabbing me severally. He inflicted deep cuts on our bodies'' Shafa'atu said
Bilya was said to have gone on a rampage threatening to stab whoever came to rescue his former wife and her brother. He was however overpowered by the police and then arrested.
Confirming his arrest, the spokesman of the police command, Abdullahi Haruna said he would be charged to court as soon as possible.
