Ghana: Supreme Court dismisses Mahama’s petition, upholds Akufo-Addo’s Election (Updated: 1 year ago)

Ghana’s Supreme Court has unanimously upheld the December 7, 2020, victory of President Nana Addo Dankwa AKufo-Addo.

The seven-member panel dismissed the petition filed by John Dramani Mahama.

The former president was the candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the main opposition.

Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, in his judgment, declared that the Mahama’s petition had no merit.

Anin-Yeboah said Mahama did not satisfy all issues outlined by the court to determine the case.

“We, therefore, have no reason to order a re-run as pleaded by the petitioner (Mahama). We accordingly dismiss the petition as having no merit,” the Chief Justice ruled.

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, declared Akufo-Addo the winner of the vote with 51.59 percent of valid votes cast as against Mahama’s 47.36 percent.
