Us Cdc Trains 40 Nigerian Health Officials On Emergency Response

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (US-CDC) has commenced a capacity-building program on health emergency response for Nigerian experts.

The two-week training in Lagos will certify the first cohort of 40 participants in the Public Health Emergency Management Professional Certification (PHEM PC).

They were drawn from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), State Health Ministries, Port Health Services, and the Nigerian military.

US-CDC Nigeria Country Director, Mary Boyd said the impact of COVID-19 illustrates the importance of ensuring healthcare systems can prevent, respond to, and recover from emergencies.

The US-CDC, NCDC, and Georgetown University are collaborating to deliver the PHEM PC training.

It equips incident managers, state epidemiologists, first responders, and other public health officials with the skillsets needed to respond to emergencies.

The participants will be tutored in risk communication, public health emergency management functions, and operations.

The US Mission in Nigeria said the training is part of America’s efforts to support pandemic preparedness globally.
